Most dictionaries define “Sustainable” as “capable of being sustained”- carrying on in a way that does not deplete, destroy, or otherwise permanently damage the world around us. We strive to apply this definition to the built world.
Grant Sustainable Builders recognizes the need to provide affordable, durable, high quality structures that are both pleasing to the eyes and that have a minimal impact on our natural surroundings. We understand that this can mean many things to many people- and ultimately for a building to be “sustainable”, it needs to meet the needs of all of its occupants over a long period of time. That is why we individually identify each of our client’s needs using our own assessment system.
We are familiar with the latest in renewable energy technology, including solar PV electric systems, solar hot water heating systems, and geothermal heating and cooling systems. If you prefer to take the more natural route to heating your home, we are familiar with passive solar design and construction. We also understand that without thorough insulation and protection against air leakage, the best HVAC systems in the world will not meet expectations. We use sustainably harvested lumber and millwork whenever possible. Of course there will always be some waste associated with any building project, which is why Grant Sustainable Builders implements comprehensive, documented, jobsite recycling. By composting wood waste, recycling cardboard, metal, drywall, and even asphalt shingles, and donating any salvageable materials and appliances, we can often divert over 75% of all waste from the landfill.
